To create a sustainable future we need to understand the silos that limit us, so we can escape them. This session explores why and how we build them in the first place..

The challenge of creating a sustainable future is so large and the nature of the problems so fundamental, it is critical that we break out of our current thinking to design new solutions.

This Question & Answer session is designed to take the brilliant and innovative viewpoints of the world renowned speakers and rub them together in an attempt to fire some sparks that will lead to new thinking outside the box.

The sessions will adopt an interactive format, where attendees can post questions before hand, the moderator will launch the discussion and guide it through some of the more challenging terrain posed by the audience.

Participate with speakers in a Q&A panel discussion facilitated by Giovanni Ebono, for the unique opportunity to engage with the following panel and other conference delegates.

  • Annie Leonard
  • Professor Ian Lowe
  • Richard Sanders
  • Bruce Mitchell
  • Nadja Kunz

You don't know who Annie Leonard is, take to the time to find out as she is not to be missed!

Ann Leonard - The Story of Stuff

Annie Leonard is the author and host of our very own The Story of Stuff. Annie has spent nearly two decades investigating and organizing on environmental health and justice issues. She has travelled to 40 countries, visiting literally hundreds of factories where our stuff is made and dumps where our stuff is dumped. Witnessing first hand the horrendous impacts of both over- and under-consumption around the world, Annie is fiercely dedicated to reclaiming and transforming our industrial and economic systems so they serve, rather than undermine, ecological sustainability and social equity.

Professor Ian Lowe - Australian Conservation Foundation President

Professor Lowe has been a referee for the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, attended the Geneva and Kyoto conferences of the parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change and was a member of the Australian delegation to the 1999 UNESCO World Conference on Science. He was on the steering group for the UNEP project Global environmental Outlook, an invited participant in the 2000 workshop on Sustainability Science and a referee for both the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program’s 2004 book on planetary science and the 2005 Millennium Assessment Report.

Richard Sanders - Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy

Richard is a transdisciplinary systems thinker who has grappled with the questions of what the sustainable society would necessarily look like in principle (based on ecological and thermodynamic imperatives), the transitionary technical and social pathways necessary to get there, and the democratic political processes necessary to bring about such a transition. As an activist he has been a founder or co-founder of many initiatives in the quest for sustainability.

Bruce Mitchell - Mitchell Builders

Bruce Mitchell is a pioneer in the field of eco-friendly construction. He is a man who pays no attention when told, ‘It can’t be done.’ Winner of the 2010 Qld Premier's ClimateSmart Award, the UDIA 2010 National Environment Build award, run up in the national Banksia awards for 2010 and the Qld finalist as the 2011 Australian of the Year, Mitchell's EcoEnterprise Park at Stapylton, south of Brisbane, is Australia’s first industrial estate that is 100 per cent self-sustaining and carbon neutral.

Nadja Kunz- Phd Student at the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (Youth Representative)

Nadja's thesis seeks to understand how interactions between human and engineered systems influence sustainability implementation within the industrial sector. She is gathering empirical data from two case study sites and using a combination of systems modelling and social network analysis approaches. She was a member of the inaugural Queensland Youth Environment Council and has volunteered with Youth Challenge Australia and Engineers Without Borders.dd
