Sustainable Cities Index – Monica Richtor
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is committed to inspiring people to achieve a healthy environment for all Australians. For over 40 years they have been a voice for the environment, promoting solutions through research, consultation, education and partnership. ACF is Australia's leading national not-for-profit environment organisation and are funded almost entirely by 40,000 individual members and supporters.

The ACF Sustainable Cities Index 2010 continues their history of fostering public debate through independent peer-reviewed research, and explores the relationship between Australia's natural and built environment to inform the transition toward sustainable cities.

Monica spoke about the methodology used to compile the index and provided a brief summary and interpretation of the outcomes. For more information on the Sustainable Cities index please see the ACF website or to download her slides click here (3.6MB).

Sustainable Development – Dr Jean Venables
Jean briefly reviewed the concept of sustainable development and how it links to engineering in general and civil engineering in particular as a starting point for discussion of the challenges it presents. She illustrated those challenges and possible solutions from her own experience in the water field, linked to the need for both mitigation (including carbon emission reductions) and adaptation in the face of climate change.  She did this by discussing the case study Thames Estuary 2100 - Managing tidal flood risk through the 21st Century.  Click here for a copy of Jean's slides (4.2MB)
