Coal Seam Gas and the Environment: Why is So Much Hot Air Bubbling to the Surface?
CitySmart is investigating the feasibility of a District Cooling System (DCS) for the Brisbane Central Business District. A district cooling system is a centralised water chilling system that will replace the chillers and cooling towers within individual buildings, supplying them instead with chilled water through underground pipes. When combined with Thermal Energy Storage (TES), the system can chill water during off-peak periods and will result in significant energy savings for individual buildings (and overall), as well as significant cost savings.
In November 2012 the first Basin Plan made under the Commonwealth Water Act 2007 was finalised. The Basin Plan is a Commonwealth legislative instrument that relates to the management of water within the Basin and coordinates water use across the Basin's four states and one territory. Significantly, the Plan set limits on the amount of surface water and groundwater that can be used throughout the Basin. These limits are known as Sustainable Diversion Limits.
This session will provide an overview of Beyond Zero Emissions Transport Plan including Melbourne’s current transport system and expenditure, a proposal for high speed rail networks and an explanation on the methodology of urban transport. Our second speaker, Fiona Calvert from the Victorian Department of Transport will discuss transport planning issues generally in Melbourne.
